Amos
Dipikul; suatu beban, salah satu dari dua belas nabi kecil. Dia adalah penduduk asli Tekoa, Tekua modern, sebuah kota sekitar 12 mil di sebelah tenggara Betlehem. Dia berasal dari kalangan sederhana, bukan “seorang nabi ataupun anak seorang nabi,” melainkan “seorang peternak dan pemelihara pohon ara hutan,” R.V. Dia bernubuat pada zaman Uzia, raja Yehuda, dan sezaman dengan Yesaya dan Hosea (Amos 1:1; 7:14, 15; Zakharia 14:5), yang hidup beberapa tahun lebih lama darinya. Di bawah Yerobeam II, kerajaan Israel mencapai puncak kemakmurannya; tetapi hal itu diikuti oleh merajalelanya kemewahan, kejahatan, dan penyembahan berhala. Pada masa inilah Amos dipanggil dari kehidupannya yang bersahaja untuk mengingatkan umat akan hukum keadilan pembalasan Allah, dan menyerukan mereka untuk bertobat.
