Baal
Nama yang dikhususkan bagi dewa laki-laki utama orang Fenisia. Nama ini ditemukan di beberapa tempat dalam bentuk jamak BAALIM (Hakim-hakim 2:11; 10:10; 1 Raja-raja 18:18; Yeremia 2:23; Hosea 2:17). Baal disamakan dengan Molokh (Yeremia 19:5). Dewa ini dikenal oleh orang Israel sebagai Baal-Peor (Bilangan 25:3; Ulangan 4:3), disembah hingga zaman Samuel (1 Samuel 7:4), dan kemudian menjadi agama dari sepuluh suku pada zaman Ahab (1 Raja-raja 16:31-33; 18:19, 22). Penyembahannya juga sempat merajalela di kerajaan Yehuda (2 Raja-raja 8:27; bdk. 2 Raja-raja 11:18; 2 Raja-raja 16:3; 2 Tawarikh 28:2), hingga akhirnya diakhiri melalui disiplin keras masa Pembuangan (Zefanya 1:4-6). Imam-imam Baal berjumlah sangat banyak (1 Raja-raja 18:19) dan terdiri dari berbagai tingkatan (2 Raja-raja 10:19). Cara mereka mempersembahkan korban digambarkan dalam 1 Raja-raja 18:25-29. Dewa matahari ini, dengan gelar umum Baal, atau “tuan”, merupakan objek utama penyembahan orang Kanaan. Setiap daerah memiliki Baal khususnya sendiri, dan berbagai Baal lokal ini terangkum dalam nama Baalim, atau “tuan-tuan”. Setiap Baal memiliki seorang istri, yang merupakan cerminan samar dari dirinya sendiri.
