Yaitu, anak dari Abba atau dari seorang bapa, seorang penyamun terkenal yang hendak dihukum mati oleh Pilatus sebagai ganti Yesus, yang ingin dibebaskannya sesuai dengan kebiasaan Romawi (Yohanes 18:40; Markus 15:7; Lukas 23:19). Namun, orang-orang Yahudi begitu berkeras menginginkan kematian Yesus sehingga mereka menuntut agar Barabas diampuni (Matius 27:16-26; Kisah Para Rasul 3:14). Hal ini dilakukan oleh Pilatus.
