Kanaan
Negeri yang namanya diambil dari nama tokoh sebelumnya. Nama ini saat pertama kali digunakan oleh orang Fenisia hanya merujuk pada dataran maritim tempat Sidon dibangun. Namun, pada zaman Musa dan Yosua, nama ini merujuk pada seluruh negeri di sebelah barat Sungai Yordan dan Laut Mati (Ulangan 11:30). Dalam Yosua 5:12, Septuaginta (LXX) membaca, “tanah orang Fenisia”, bukan “tanah Kanaan”.
Nama ini berarti “dataran rendah”, sebagai pembeda dari tanah Gilead di sebelah timur Yordan, yang merupakan daerah pegunungan. Luas dan batas-batas Kanaan diuraikan secara lengkap di berbagai bagian Kitab Suci (Kejadian 10:19; 17:8; Bilangan 13:29; 34:8).
