Kata ini merupakan terjemahan (1) dari bahasa Ibrani ’El, dari kata yang berarti kuat; (2) dari ’Eloah, bentuk jamak ’Elohim. Bentuk tunggalnya, Eloah, hanya digunakan dalam puisi. Bentuk jamaknya lebih umum digunakan di seluruh bagian Alkitab. Kata Ibrani Yehovah (q.v.), satu-satunya kata lain yang umumnya digunakan untuk menunjukkan Sang Mahatinggi, secara seragam diterjemahkan dalam Authorized Version dengan “LORD”, dicetak dengan huruf kapital kecil. Keberadaan Allah dipandang sebagai fakta mutlak dalam Alkitab. Tidak ada sanggahan atau argumen pembuktian di dalamnya. Barang siapa yang tidak memercayai kebenaran ini disebut sebagai orang yang bebal (Mazmur 14:1).
