Yoab
Salah satu dari tiga anak laki-laki Zeruya, saudara perempuan Daud, dan “panglima tentara” di sepanjang masa pemerintahan Daud (2 Samuel 2:13; 10:7; 11:1; 1 Raja-raja 11:15). Nama ayahnya tidak pernah disebutkan di bagian mana pun, meski kuburan ayahnya di Betlehem disebutkan (2 Samuel 2:32). Kedua saudaranya adalah Abisai dan Asael, yang cepat larinya, yang dibunuh oleh Abner (2 Samuel 2:13-32), yang kemudian dibunuh secara licik oleh Yoab (2 Samuel 3:22-27). Dia kemudian memimpin penyerbuan saat perebutan benteng di Gunung Sion, dan atas jasa ini dia diangkat ke pangkat “kepala tentara raja” (2 Samuel 5:6-10; 1 Tawarikh 27:34). Prestasi militer utamanya adalah: (1) melawan pasukan gabungan Aram dan Amon; (2) melawan Edom (1 Raja-raja 11:15, 16); dan (3) melawan bani Amon (2 Samuel 10:7-19; 11:1, 11). Karakternya sangat tercemar oleh peran yang secara sukarela ia ambil dalam pembunuhan Uria (2 Samuel 11:14-25). Dia bertindak tampaknya atas dasar kewajiban ketika membunuh Absalom (2 Samuel 18:1-14). Daud melupakan banyak jasa yang telah diberikan Yoab kepadanya, dan kemudian menyerahkan komando tentara kepada Amasa, sepupu Yoab (2 Samuel 20:1-13; 19:13). Ketika Daud menjelang ajal, Yoab mendukung Adonia daripada Salomo. Dia kemudian dibunuh oleh Benaya atas perintah Salomo, sesuai dengan petunjuk ayahnya (2 Samuel 3:29; 20:5-13), di mezbah tempat dia melarikan diri untuk mencari perlindungan. Demikianlah konspirator tua ini mati tanpa ada seorang pun yang bersuara membela dirinya. Dia dikuburkan di tanah miliknya sendiri di “padang gurun”, kemungkinan di sebelah timur laut Yerusalem (1 Raja-raja 2:5, 28-34). Benaya menggantikannya sebagai panglima tentara.
