Scribes

Scribes were trained experts in copying, teaching, and interpreting the law of Moses. The Gospels frequently pair them with the Pharisees as a group that challenged Jesus over questions of law and tradition, though Jesus commended at least one scribe who recognized that loving God and neighbor mattered more than ritual sacrifice (Mark 12:28-34).
