Gilead
Bukit kesaksian (Kejadian 31:21), wilayah bergunung-gunung di sebelah timur Sungai Yordan. Karena wilayahnya yang berpegunungan, daerah ini disebut “pegunungan Gilead” (Kejadian 31:25). Daerah ini juga disebut “tanah Gilead” (Bilangan 32:1), dan terkadang hanya disebut “Gilead” (Mazmur 60:7; Kejadian 37:25). Wilayah ini mencakup milik pusaka suku Gad dan suku Ruben serta bagian selatan suku Manasye (Ulangan 3:13; Bilangan 32:40). Batas-batasnya meliputi Basyan di utara, serta Moab dan Amon di selatan (Kejadian 31:21; Ulangan 3:12-17). “Setengah Gilead” dikuasai oleh Sihon, dan separuh lainnya, yang dipisahkan oleh Sungai Yabok, dikuasai oleh Og, raja Basyan. Ngarai dalam di Sungai Hieromax (Sheriat el-Mandhur modern) memisahkan Basyan dari Gilead, yang memiliki panjang sekitar 60 mil dan lebar 20 mil, membentang dari dekat ujung selatan Danau Genesaret hingga ujung utara Laut Mati. Abarim, Pisga, Nebo, dan Peor adalah gunung-gunung di Gilead yang disebutkan dalam Kitab Suci.
