Herodes Agung adalah raja Yudea yang diangkat oleh Roma pada masa kelahiran Yesus. Injil Matius mencatat bahwa ia menerima orang-orang Majus dari timur yang mencari bayi “raja orang Yahudi”, dan setelah mereka pergi tanpa melapor kembali kepadanya, ia memerintahkan pembunuhan anak-anak laki-laki di Betlehem (Matius 2:1-16). Di luar Alkitab, ia dikenal sebagai pembangun ambisius yang memperluas bait suci Yerusalem dan mendirikan kota-kota seperti Kaisarea Maritima, serta terkenal karena kekejaman akibat rasa curiganya yang berlebihan pada akhir masa pemerintahannya, termasuk menghukum mati anggota keluarganya sendiri.
