Negeb
Ibr. Negeb, daerah gersang di sebelah selatan Palestina yang dilalui oleh rute karavan dari Palestina Tengah ke Mesir (Kejadian 12:9; 13:1, 3; 46:1-6). “Negeb mencakup wilayah yang cukup luas tetapi berbentuk tidak beraturan, bagian utamanya membentang dari pegunungan dan dataran rendah Yehuda di utara hingga pegunungan Azazemeh di selatan, dan dari Laut Mati serta Ghor selatan di timur hingga Laut Mediterania di barat.” Dalam Yehezkiel 20:46 (Yehezkiel 21:1 dalam Ibr.) tiga kata Ibrani yang berbeda semuanya diterjemahkan sebagai “selatan”. (1) “Arahkanlah mukamu ke arah selatan” (Teman, wilayah di sebelah kanan, 1 Samuel 33:24); (2) “Teteskanlah perkataanmu ke arah selatan” (Negeb, wilayah kekeringan, Yosua 15:4); (3) “Bernubuatlah melawan hutan di padang selatan” (Darom, wilayah kecemerlangan, Ulangan 33:23). Dalam Ayub 37:9 kata “selatan” secara harfiah adalah “kamar”, yang digunakan di sini dalam arti perbendaharaan (bdg. Ayub 38:22; Mazmur 135:7). Ayat ini diterjemahkan dalam Revised Version sebagai “dari ruang di selatan”.
