Sem
Sebuah nama; kemasyhuran, yang pertama disebutkan dari anak-anak Nuh (Kejadian 5:32; 6:10). Ia kemungkinan adalah anak tertua dari Nuh. Kata-kata “saudara Yafet yang lebih tua” dalam Kejadian 10:21 lebih tepat diterjemahkan sebagai “saudara tertua Yafet”, seperti dalam Versi Revisi. Nama Sem umumnya disebutkan pertama dalam daftar anak-anak Nuh. Ia dan istrinya diselamatkan di dalam bahtera (Kejadian 7:13). Nuh menubuatkan keunggulannya atas Kanaan (Kejadian 9:23-27). Ia meninggal pada usia enam ratus tahun, setelah hidup sezaman selama bertahun-tahun dengan Abraham, menurut kronologi yang lazim. Bangsa Israel berasal dari keturunannya (Kejadian 11:10-26; 1 Tawarikh 1:24-27).
