Một danh xưng; danh tiếng, người con trai đầu tiên được nhắc đến của Nô-ê (Sáng-thế Ký 5:32; 6:10). Ông có lẽ là con trưởng của Nô-ê. Cụm từ “anh em Gia-phết là anh” trong Sáng-thế Ký 10:21 được dịch chính xác hơn là “anh cả của Gia-phết” như trong Bản Hiệu Đính (Revised Version). Tên của Sem thường được nhắc đến đầu tiên trong danh sách các con trai của Nô-ê. Ông và vợ được cứu trong tàu (Sáng-thế Ký 7:13). Nô-ê đã báo trước quyền vượt trội của ông trên Ca-na-an (Sáng-thế Ký 9:23-27). Ông qua đời ở tuổi sáu trăm, từng sống đồng thời với Áp-ra-ham trong nhiều năm theo niên đại thông thường. Dân tộc Y-sơ-ra-ên bắt nguồn từ ông (Sáng-thế Ký 11:10-26; 1 Sử-ký 1:24-27).
