Darius
Darius the Mede is named in the book of Daniel as the ruler who took control of Babylon after its fall and set Daniel over his kingdom (Daniel 5:31; 6:1-2). He is best known for signing the decree, engineered by rivals jealous of Daniel, that made prayer to any god or man other than himself a capital offense, leading to Daniel's night in the lions' den (Daniel 6:6-16). He does not appear under this name in secular records, and his identity outside the Bible is debated among historians. He is a different person from Darius I, the Persian king who later authorized the rebuilding of the Jerusalem temple.
