ElijahElijah challenged four hundred fifty prophets of Baal to a public contest on Mount Carmel, each side calling on its god to send fire and consume a sacrificial bull. After the prophets of Baal failed through a full day of frenzied appeals, Elijah soaked his altar with water and prayed once, and fire fell and consumed the offering, the wood, and the stones. The crowd fell on their faces, declaring the Lord God.
