Yesus memilih dua belas pengikut-Nya untuk menjadi rasul-rasul-Nya, kelompok inti yang diutus-Nya untuk memberitakan firman, menyembuhkan penyakit, dan mengusir roh-roh jahat dalam nama-Nya (Markus 3:13-19).
