Rahel
Domba betina, “anak perempuan”, “anak perempuan bungsu Laban yang agak lekas marah, mudah tersinggung, dan keras kepala namun cantik”, serta salah seorang istri Yakub (Kejadian 29:6, 28). Yakub melayani Laban selama empat belas tahun demi dirinya, begitu mendalam kasih sayang Yakub kepadanya. Dia adalah ibu dari Yusuf (Kejadian 30:22-24). Kemudian, saat keberangkatan Yakub dari Mesopotamia, ia membawa terafim ayahnya (Kejadian 31:34, 35). Ketika mereka meneruskan perjalanan dari Betel, Rahel meninggal saat melahirkan Benyamin (Kejadian 35:18, 19), dan dimakamkan “di jalan menuju Efrata, yaitu Betlehem. Yakub pun mendirikan tugu di atas kuburnya”. Makamnya masih sangat dihormati oleh orang Yahudi. Lokasi tradisionalnya terletak sekitar setengah mil dari Yerusalem.
Nama ini digunakan secara puitis oleh Yeremia (Kejadian 31:15-17) untuk melambangkan umat Allah yang berkabung dalam malapetaka mereka. Bagian ini juga dikutip oleh Matius sebagai digenapi dalam ratapan di Betlehem akibat pembantaian bayi-bayi di sana atas perintah Herodes (Matius 2:17, 18).
