Ba-la-am
Chúa tể của dân sự; hoặc người ngoại bang hay kẻ háu ăn theo cách giải nghĩa khác; là con trai của Bê-ô, một người có địa vị trong vòng dân Ma-đi-an (Dân-số Ký 31:8; so sánh câu 16). Ông cư ngụ tại Phê-thô-rơ (Phục-truyền Luật-lệ Ký 23:4), thuộc Mê-sô-bô-ta-mi (Dân-số Ký 23:7). Rõ ràng là dù sống giữa những kẻ thờ thần tượng, ông vẫn có sự hiểu biết nào đó về Đức Chúa Trời thật; và ông có tiếng đến nỗi người ta nghĩ rằng hễ ai được ông chúc phước thì được phước, ai bị ông rủa sả thì bị rủa sả. Khi dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đóng trại trong đồng bằng Mô-áp, bên kia sông Giô-đanh, đối ngang Giê-ri-cô, Ba-lác đã sai người đi mời Ba-la-am “từ A-ram, nơi núi hướng đông” đến để rủa sả họ; nhưng bởi sự can thiệp lạ lùng của Đức Chúa Trời, ông hoàn toàn không thể thực hiện ước muốn của Ba-lác, dù rất muốn làm điều đó. Sứ đồ Phi-e-rơ đã nhắc đến sự kiện này (2 Phi-e-rơ 2:15, 16) như một biến cố lịch sử. Trong Mi-chê 6:5 cũng có tham chiếu về mối quan hệ giữa Ba-la-am và Ba-lác. Dù Ba-la-am không thể rủa sả Y-sơ-ra-ên, nhưng ông đã bày mưu khiến cơn thịnh nộ thiêng liêng giáng trên họ (Dân-số Ký 25). Trong trận chiến giữa Y-sơ-ra-ên và dân Ma-đi-an (xem mục này), Ba-la-am đã bị giết khi đang chiến đấu về phía Ba-lác (Dân-số Ký 31:8).
“Sự dạy dỗ của Ba-la-am” được nhắc đến trong Khải-huyền 2:14, ám chỉ đến việc chính qua lời chỉ dẫn của Ba-la-am mà Ba-lác biết cách dẫn dụ dân Y-sơ-ra-ên phạm tội. Ba-la-am bị buộc phải nói ra những lời tiên tri về tương lai của Y-sơ-ra-ên với vẻ tráng lệ tuyệt vời và lời lẽ tuyệt mỹ (Dân-số Ký 24:5-9, 17).
