Darius I of Persia ruled the empire during the years the Jewish exiles rebuilt the temple in Jerusalem. When local officials tried to halt the work, he had the royal archives searched, confirmed Cyrus's original decree permitting it, and ordered the building to continue with royal funding (Ezra 6:1-12). The prophets Haggai and Zechariah dated their messages to his reign (Haggai 1:1; Zechariah 1:1), and the temple was finished in his sixth year (Ezra 6:15).
