Esarhaddon became king of Assyria after his father Sennacherib was assassinated by two of his own sons (2 Kings 19:36-37). He is also named in Ezra 4:2 as the king who resettled foreign peoples in Samaria, among the ancestors of those who later opposed the rebuilding of the Jerusalem temple.
