Mary is betrothed to Joseph, a descendant of David, around the time the angel Gabriel visits her (Luke 1:27). Matthew records that Joseph, on learning she was pregnant, planned to quietly end the engagement before an angel reassured him in a dream (Matthew 1:18-19).
