Stefanus, salah satu dari tujuh orang yang dipilih untuk melayani jemaat mula-mula, dilempari batu sampai mati setelah menyampaikan pidato di hadapan Mahkamah Agama yang menuduh para pemimpin Yahudi menentang Roh Kudus sebagaimana yang dilakukan nenek moyang mereka, menjadikannya martir Kristen pertama (Kisah Para Rasul 7). Seorang pemuda bernama Saulus, yang kemudian menjadi rasul Paulus, menyetujui kematian Stefanus dan menjaga jubah orang-orang yang melemparinya dengan batu.
