Chosen by lot to replace Judas Iscariot among the twelve apostles, after the remaining eleven prayed for God to reveal his choice between Matthias and Joseph called Barsabas (Acts 1:23, 1:26). Nothing else is recorded about him in the Bible, though later tradition credits him with missionary work and martyrdom.
