The Most Holy Place, also called the Holy of Holies, was the innermost chamber of the tabernacle and later the temple, containing the ark of the covenant. Only the high priest could enter it, and only once a year on the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16); the New Testament describes the curtain separating it from the rest of the temple as torn in two at Jesus's death (Matthew 27:51).
