Simeon was an elderly, devout man in Jerusalem who had been promised he would not die before seeing the Messiah. When Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the temple, Simeon took him in his arms, praised God in the words now known as the Nunc Dimittis, and told Mary that a sword would pierce her own soul as well (Luke 2:25-35).
