Ê-lam
Vùng cao nguyên, con trai của Sem (Sáng-thế Ký 10:22), và là tên của xứ sở do dòng dõi người sinh sống (Sáng-thế Ký 14:1, 9; Ê-sai 11:11; 21:2, v.v.) nằm ở phía đông Ba-by-lôn, trải dài đến bờ Địa Trung Hải, cách khoảng 1.000 dặm theo đường chim bay. Tên Ê-lam là một từ tiếng A-si-ri có nghĩa là “cao”.
“Dân cư xứ Ê-lam, hay ‘Vùng Cao nguyên’, ở phía đông Ba-by-lôn, được gọi là người Ê-lam. Họ chia thành nhiều nhánh, nói các phương ngữ khác nhau của cùng một ngôn ngữ chắp dính. Chủng tộc của họ có dạng đầu ngắn (brachycephalic), giống như người Su-me tiền Semitic ở Ba-by-lôn.
“Vương quốc Ê-lam đầu tiên dường như là Anzan, vị trí chính xác của nơi này vẫn chưa rõ ràng; nhưng vào thời Áp-ra-ham, Su-sơ (hoặc Susa) dường như đã trở thành thủ đô của xứ này. Ba-by-lôn thường xuyên bị các vua Ê-lam xâm lược, những người đôi khi khẳng định quyền tối thượng trên xứ đó (như trường hợp của Kết-rô-Lao-me, tức Kudur-Lagamar, hay ‘kẻ phục vụ nữ thần Lagamar’, trong các văn bản chữ hình nêm).
“Các vị vua A-si-ri sau này đã tiến hành nhiều chiến dịch chống lại Ê-lam, và cuối cùng A-su-ba-ni-pan (khoảng năm 650 TCN) đã thành công trong việc chinh phục xứ này, tàn phá nó bằng gươm giáo và lửa. Khi Đế quốc A-si-ri sụp đổ, Ê-lam rơi vào tay người Ba Tư” (A.H. Sayce).
Xứ này được người Hy Lạp gọi là Cissia hoặc Susiana.
