Tuổi trẻ non nớt, “kẻ giữ kho” coi sóc hoàng cung dưới triều vua Ê-xê-chia, tức là quan cai đền hay quan quản đốc cung điện. Vì tính kiêu ngạo, ông đã bị bãi chức và Ê-li-a-kim được cất nhắc lên thay thế (Ê-sai 22:15-25). Dường như ông là người lãnh đạo phe chủ trương liên minh với Ê-díp-tô để chống lại A-si-ri. Người ta phỏng đoán rằng “thơ ký Sép-na”, một trong những người được vua sai đi hội đàm với sứ giả A-si-ri (2 Các Vua 18:18, 26, 37; 2 Các Vua 19:2; Ê-sai 36:3, 11, 22; Ê-sai 37:2), là một người khác.
