Herod slays male children
After the magi who came seeking the newborn "king of the Jews" leave without reporting back to him, Herod the Great orders the killing of all boys two years old and under in Bethlehem, trying to eliminate the child he saw as a rival (Matthew 2:16-18). Joseph, warned in a dream, has already fled with Mary and Jesus to Egypt.
