Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, captured a cluster of towns in Gilead and Bashan during Israel's conquest east of the Jordan and renamed them Havoth-jair, "the villages of Jair," after himself (Numbers 32:41; Deuteronomy 3:14). He is distinct from the later judge of the same name.
