He helped direct the rebuilding of the temple (Ezra 3:9), joined in teaching the law to the people (Nehemiah 8:7), and led the Levites in a public confession and prayer (Nehemiah 9:4-5). He is later listed among those who sealed the covenant with Nehemiah (Nehemiah 10:9; 12:8).
