Pharaoh Necho II of Egypt was marching north to aid the remnant of Assyria against Babylon when King Josiah of Judah tried to block his advance at Megiddo; Necho killed Josiah in the encounter (2 Kings 23:29). He then deposed Josiah's successor Jehoahaz, exiled him to Egypt, and installed Jehoiakim as a tribute-paying vassal king in his place (2 Kings 23:31-35). Jeremiah 46 records a prophecy against Necho's army after its later defeat by Babylon at Carchemish.

2 Kings 23:33	And Pharaohnechoh put him in bands at Riblah in the land of Hamath, that he might not reign in Jerusalem; and put the land to a tribute of an hundred talents of silver, and a talent of gold.
