Place
Topheth
Topheth was a site within the Valley of Hinnom, just outside Jerusalem, where child sacrifice was practiced during the reigns of Judah's more idolatrous kings. Jeremiah condemned the practice and prophesied that the valley would instead become known as a place of slaughter and burial (Jeremiah 7:31-32, 19:6). Its later reputation for fire and horror fed into the New Testament's use of the related term Gehenna for hell.
