Wars of the Bible
From Israel's first battle with Amalek in the wilderness to Jerusalem's fall to Babylon seven centuries later, the Old Testament narrates dozens of wars between Israel, Judah, and their neighbors: Philistines, Moab, Ammon, Aram, Egypt, Assyria, Babylon among them. Some of these wars Scripture frames as commanded or blessed by God; others it names outright as judgment for Israel or Judah's own sin; many it simply records without stating a verdict either way.

Amalek at Rephidim
Amalek vs. Israel · Israel won
Exodus & Conquest · Unattributed
Amalek attacks the rear of Israel's column at Rephidim without provocation. As long as Moses holds the staff of God aloft on the hilltop, Joshua's fighters below hold the field; when his arms drop, Amalek gains ground, until Aaron and Hur prop his hands up until sunset.
Conquest of Jericho
Israel vs. Canaanites · Israel won
Exodus & Conquest · Commanded
The first Canaanite city Israel faces after crossing the Jordan falls without a single recorded blow — seven days of silent marching around its walls, then a shout and a trumpet blast, and the walls collapse.
Battle of Ai
Israel vs. Canaanites · Israel won
Exodus & Conquest · Commanded
Israel's first attempt on Ai ends in a rout after Achan's hidden plunder from Jericho brings defeat on the whole camp. Once the sin is dealt with, Joshua draws Ai's army out with a feigned retreat and burns the city from an ambush set the night before.
Battle of Gibeon
Canaanites vs. Israel · Israel won
Exodus & Conquest · Commanded
Five Amorite kings besiege Gibeon for making peace with Israel. Joshua marches all night from Gilgal to relieve his new allies, routing the coalition down the pass of Beth-horon under a hailstorm the text says killed more of them than Israelite swords did.
Waters of Merom
Israel vs. Canaanites · Israel won
Exodus & Conquest · Commanded
Jabin of Hazor musters a northern coalition "as numerous as the sand on the seashore" with horses and chariots. Joshua's forces fall on them by surprise at the waters of Merom and burn Hazor, the head of all those kingdoms, to the ground.
Deborah and Barak vs. Canaan
Canaanites vs. Israel · Israel won
Judges · Commanded
Twenty years under Jabin of Hazor's commander Sisera and his nine hundred iron chariots end when the prophetess Deborah sends Barak to Mount Tabor. The Kishon floods and mires the chariots, and Sisera flees on foot to his death at Jael's hand.
Gideon vs. Midian
Midian vs. Israel · Israel won
Judges · Commanded
Midianite raiders strip the land bare every harvest until Gideon, threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from them, is called to lead. Three hundred men with torches and empty jars rout an army "thick as locusts" by night at the Spring of Harod.
Jephthah vs. Ammon
Ammon vs. Israel · Israel won
Judges · Commanded
Ammon presses into Gilead demanding land Israel took centuries earlier from the Amorites, not from them. Jephthah, recalled from exile by Gilead's own elders, strikes Ammon's towns from Aroer to Minnith before a rash vow costs him his daughter.
Samson vs. Philistines
Philistines vs. Israel · Ambiguous outcome
Judges · Commanded
An angel announces before his birth that Samson will only begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines, not finish the job. Twenty years of solo raids, riddles, and a final act pulling down Dagon's temple weaken but never break Philistine power in his lifetime.
Philistines Capture the Ark
Philistines vs. Israel · Philistines won
United Monarchy · Judgment
Israel loses a battle at Aphek, then fetches the ark from Shiloh hoping it will fight for them instead of trusting God, and loses again — thirty thousand dead, the ark captured, and Eli's corrupt sons Hophni and Phinehas killed exactly as an earlier prophecy warned.
Samuel's Victory at Ebenezer
Philistines vs. Israel · Israel won
United Monarchy · Commanded
Twenty years later Samuel calls Israel to put away its foreign gods, offers a sacrifice at Mizpah, and the Philistines attack mid-ceremony. Thunder from the LORD throws them into confusion, and Samuel sets up a stone at the very battlefield of Israel's earlier defeat, naming it Ebenezer: "thus far the LORD has helped us."
Saul vs. Amalek
Israel vs. Amalek · Israel won
United Monarchy · Commanded
God orders Saul, through Samuel, to destroy Amalek completely for its ambush of Israel generations earlier in the wilderness. Saul wins the battle but spares king Agag and the best of the plunder, and the partial obedience costs him his kingship.
Battle of Michmash
Philistines vs. Israel · Israel won
United Monarchy · Unattributed
Jonathan and his armor-bearer alone climb a cliff to attack a Philistine outpost at Michmash, and a panic sent among the garrison — the ground itself shaking — routs an army Israel had been hiding from in caves and thickets.
David vs. Philistines at Baal-perazim
Philistines vs. Israel · Israel won
United Monarchy · Commanded
Now king over all Israel, David inquires of the LORD before facing the Philistines massed in the Valley of Rephaim and is told plainly to go up. He breaks through their line at Baal Perazim — "like a bursting flood" — and they leave their idols behind in the retreat.
David vs. Aram-Zobah
Israel vs. Aram · Israel won
United Monarchy · Commanded
David defeats Hadadezer of Zobah near the Euphrates and puts garrisons in Aram-Damascus when Aram comes to Hadadezer's aid. The text credits it plainly: "the LORD preserved David wherever he went."
David vs. Ammon
Israel vs. Ammon · Israel won
United Monarchy · Unattributed
Ammon's king humiliates David's envoys of condolence, shaving their beards and cutting their robes, then hires Aramean mercenaries expecting reprisal. Joab and David besiege the capital Rabbah for the better part of a year before it falls.
Abijah vs. Jeroboam
Israel vs. Judah · Judah won
Divided Monarchy · Commanded
Jeroboam sets an ambush of twice Judah's numbers at Mount Zemaraim, and Abijah of Judah appeals from a hilltop to the LORD, God of their fathers, before the trumpets sound. The text says God struck Jeroboam and all Israel down before Judah that day.
Ahab at Ramoth-gilead
Israel vs. Aram · Aram won
Divided Monarchy · Judgment
Ahab enlists Jehoshaphat of Judah to retake Ramoth-gilead from Aram despite the lone true prophet Micaiah warning it will cost him his life. Disguised in the battle, Ahab is struck by a random arrow and dies as the army disperses, the city still Aram's.
Aram vs. Judah (Syro-Ephraimite War)
Aram vs. Judah · Ambiguous outcome
Divided Monarchy · Judgment
Rezin of Aram and Pekah of Israel march on Jerusalem together to force Ahaz of Judah into their coalition against Assyria. The city holds, but Chronicles gives the verdict plainly: "the LORD his God gave him into the hand of the king of Aram," who carried off a great number of captives to Damascus.
Israel vs. Judah (Pekah's Invasion)
Israel vs. Judah · Israel won
Divided Monarchy · Judgment
In the same war, Pekah of Israel kills a hundred and twenty thousand men of Judah in a single day and takes two hundred thousand women and children captive — Chronicles states outright that this happened because Judah had forsaken the LORD.
Hazael vs. Israel
Aram vs. Israel · Aram won
Divided Monarchy · Judgment
With Jehu's dynasty still clinging to Jeroboam's golden calves, Hazael of Aram begins stripping away Israel's Transjordan territory, from Aroer on the Arnon through all of Gilead. The text ties the losses directly to the LORD "cutting Israel short" in that period.
Jehoshaphat vs. Moab Coalition
Moab vs. Judah · Judah won
Divided Monarchy · Commanded
Moab, Ammon, and their allies march on Judah, and Jehoshaphat is told through a prophet that the battle is not his to fight — just to stand and watch. He sends singers ahead of the army instead of soldiers, and the coalition turns on itself before Judah arrives.
Mesha's Rebellion
Israel vs. Moab · Ambiguous outcome
Divided Monarchy · Unattributed
Moab's king Mesha stops paying tribute after Ahab's death, and Israel marches against him with Judah and Edom in support. The campaign breaks Moab's cities and besieges its capital Kir-hareseth, but ends abruptly and short of full conquest.
Amaziah vs. Edom
Judah vs. Edom · Judah won
Divided Monarchy · Unattributed
Amaziah of Judah kills ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt and takes their stronghold Sela by storm, renaming it Joktheel. He then brings Edom's gods home and starts worshipping them, which a prophet tells him is exactly why he'll lose his next war.
Uzziah vs. Philistines
Judah vs. Philistines · Judah won
Divided Monarchy · Commanded
Uzziah tears down the walls of Gath, Jabneh, and Ashdod and builds towns in Philistine territory. The text is explicit about why he could: "God helped him against the Philistines."
Fall of Samaria
Assyria vs. Israel · Assyria won
Divided Monarchy · Judgment
After two centuries of a kingdom built on Jeroboam's golden calves and generations of prophetic warning, Assyria takes Samaria after a three-year siege and deports Israel's population east. Kings gives its own verdict at length: this happened because Israel sinned against the LORD.
Sennacherib vs. Judah
Assyria vs. Judah · Judah won
Divided Monarchy · Commanded
Sennacherib's army has already taken Lachish and every other fortified city in Judah when it turns to besiege Jerusalem, and the Assyrian field commander mocks Hezekiah's God by name outside the walls. Hezekiah spreads the threatening letter before the LORD in the temple, and 185,000 Assyrians are found dead by morning.
Josiah vs. Necho
Egypt vs. Judah · Egypt won

Battle of Carchemish
Babylon vs. Egypt · Babylon won
Divided Monarchy · Unattributed
Necho's army, retreating from its earlier campaign, is destroyed at Carchemish on the Euphrates by Nebuchadnezzar's Babylonian forces. Egypt's defeat here ends its influence in the Levant for a generation and leaves Judah a Babylonian vassal instead of an Egyptian one.
Fall of Jerusalem
Babylon vs. Judah · Babylon won
Exile · Judgment
After Zedekiah's own rebellion, Nebuchadnezzar besieges Jerusalem for a year and a half before breaching its walls, burning the temple, and executing Zedekiah's sons in front of him at Riblah before blinding him. Kings names the cause without softening it: "through the anger of the LORD this happened."
