Đức Chúa Jêsus bị giải đến trước mặt quan tổng đốc La Mã Bôn-xơ Phi-lát. Phi-lát không tìm thấy căn cứ pháp lý nào để tuyên án tử hình, nhưng dưới áp lực từ đám đông và các nhà lãnh đạo Do Thái, cuối cùng ông đã trao Ngài để đem đi đóng đinh sau khi không thành công trong việc đề nghị tha Ngài thay vì Ba-ra-ba (Ma-thi-ơ 27:11-26; Lu-ca 23:6-12 ghi lại việc Phi-lát cũng gửi Đức Chúa Jêsus đến cho Hê-rốt An-ti-pa).
